This 2026 version of the state tournament has some familiarity as both Kimball and Mansfield Summit look to defend last year’s title.

Carter is seeking it’s first state title while Madison makes a familiar return to the game the school has won 5 times.

Little Elm lost to North Crowley 69-67 earlier in the season nut has not lost a contest since beating Cypress Springs 60-51 to earn their first trip to the state tournament.

Both North Crowley and Frisco Heritage’s semifinal contests came down to the last shot with Heritage’s Cameron Lomax hitting a weaving one-legged floater to avenge last year’s loss to state runner-up Birdville.

North Crowley was at the line with 17.1 seconds left as senior Tyler Hastings was inserted in to the game as a replacement free throw shooter for the Panthers due to injury. Hastings would miss both free throws but after a scrum and tip for the rebound the ball landed in Alex Barther’s hand and with no hesitation he passed to Hastings who drilled the three pointer giving North Crowley a 50-49 win and it’s first trip to the state championship since 2008.

Round 1 of the Texas High School State Boys Basketball Playoffs started with a little drama. Lancaster and The Colony both advanced on buzzer beating three pointers to earn them one more game. Eaton’s double digit win over a solid Mansfield Lake Ridge team came as a bit of a surprise, not because of the victory but the domination from beginning to end.

Round 2 gives us plenty of spicy matchups as the effects of the new playoff format bring potential regional semi-final and final matchups in to the second round.

Kam McGilveary, 6’1, Dynamic Prep - McGilveary has shown improved decision making and shooting ability while maintaining vertical explosiveness and elite defensive ability.

Jonathan Williams, 5’10, Mansfield Timberview - Explosive guard with a ton of burst. Williams thrives getting to the paint and has added the ability to finish through contact or over defenders with posterizing power.

Kayden Gray, 6’1, Dallas Kimball - Gray is a strong bodied scorer with a streaky jump shot. Can put up big numbers when he gets it going.

The class of 2029 has stepped on to the high school scene making an impact. A versatile group with an extremely high ceiling, 6’10 big man Alex Alexander (Mesquite) takes the number one spot, followed by another versatile 6’9 post player Felix Okam (Grand Prairie). 6’5 Joseph Creal III (Mansfield Summit), 6’2 Vijay Keshaav (Frisco Memorial) and 6’2 Terrance Johnson (Plano) complete the top 5.

The initial rankings feature 20 players and will receive an update at the conclusion of the high school season and will be expanded to feature more players midsummer.

There wasn’t an abundance of wings at this year’s Pangos All-South but size, length and positional skill were there in the prospects in attendance.

2029 6’7 Kenneth Gabriel Jr (Mansfield Legacy) has ideal positional size and athleticism. Checks all of the boxes, just needs game reps at the varsity level.

2029 6’4 Brooks Richmond (Waxahachie) is a long perimeter player with a good looking jump shot in catch and shoot situations.

2028 6’5 Slade Bradley (Keller) has a good jumper, is an engaged defender and works well in space.

2028 6’9 Cameron Crenshaw (San Antonio Wagner) fits the prototype 3&D player. Length, athleticism, and activity on the defensive end.

2029 6’5 Joseph Creal III (Mansfield Summit) is one of the best shooters in the class but is also good downhill and finishing at the rim with touch.

2029 6’6 Dexter Gbedemakou (Irving Nimitz) does a little bit of it all. Can rebound and start the fastbreak, defends and can handle the ball in the halfcourt when needed.

2029 6’7 Kosi Nzeribe (Cedar Hill) was getting use to the speed and physicality of elite level high school basketball but already has the size and frame that helps with the adjustment.

Very rarely do I cover middle school basketball players but 4 players in the class of 2030 were named to the Top 60 and Top 30 All-Star games.

2030 6’7 DJ Parker is a top 10 player in the nation and if he isn’t I need to see the 9 players in front of him. There’s an argument for Parker being the best over all prospect at the camp. A wing, Parker can attack downhill, has a serviceable jump shot and plays above the rim. While many kids play at about 70% in these settings, Parker’s motor runs high at all times. He defends, rebounds and runs the floor with ease.

2030 6’2 Heir Jackson is an elite athlete. Primarily a shooting guard, Jackson showed combo guard ability while being a three level threat. He can finish through and above contact, while his pace on offense keeps defenders on their heels.

2030 6’1 Bison Lott has an excellent frame and natural scoring instincts. Uses his body well to size up defenders and hit some tough shots all weekend.

2030 6’1 Kayden Williams has knee length arms to go with above average athleticism. Loves to break down his defender for drives or pull up threes.

2028 5’10 Aiden Clark (Houston Legacy SSS) was a Top 60 All-Star game participant last year. Clark left no doubt this year as he was named the Top 30 All-Star game MVP. A two hand putback dunk in the day’s final game was the culminating moment. Clark was brilliant all weekend with stop and go hesitation, acrobatic finishing, and three point shooting. He’s equal playmaker and scorer with the ball on a string.

2029 6’5 Michael Sorrell (ESD) may already be the best shooter in the area regardless of class. He was almost automatic from deep ranges from all over the floor.

2028 6’1 Bae Bae Groom (Duncanville) is known as a shooter primarily but was solid at being the primary ballhandler for his team this weekend. He’s an excellent three point shooter but was able to get to the paint while scoring or creating for others.

2028 5’10 Jonathan Rodriguez (Lakeridge) was quick, crafty and decisive. He has a high level understanding of what pressure from the point and paint touches do to opposing defenses. He was also a consistent three point shooter.

2028 6’3 Marcellus Luster (Denton Guyer) is a creative shooter. He has nice wiggle from the wing and athleticism in traffic. Can be deadly from three with or without a hand in his face.

2029 6’2 Terrance Johnson (Plano) is a smooth operator. Never rushed or seemingly bothered with the ball in his hands, Johnson was good from mid range and beyond the arc. Very high ceiling.

2028 6’4 Haynes Brookhart (JJ Pearce) gave me “late 90’s/early 2000’s” shooter vibes. A high release and great elevation, Brookhart is an ideal catch & shoot threat.

2029 6’2 Vijay Keshaav (Frisco Memorial) was a top 30 game selection this year after missing the game last year. Has the ability to slash and score from midrange, intriguing as a point guard.

2028 5’11 Jordan Hopkins (Frisco Emerson) is a speedy playmaker looking to make his teammates better. Very good on ball defender.

2029 5’9 Braylon Manning (Waxahachie) is a quick shifty point guard that earned MVP of the top 60 game and invitation to the top 30 game. Can shoot off the dribble and in catch & shoot situations.

2028 5’11 Kenny ‘KT’ Turner (Mansfield) is a coach’s son and you can tell the way he plays the game. Always looking to make the right play, Turner has all the tools as a number one option as well.

2029 5’9 Dashon Jones (Mesquite) is a shifty pass first point guard with a lot of wiggle and sees the floor very well.

2028 6’2 Finlay Rosener (Katy Seven Lakes) had great pace and a soft touch around the rim to go with above average athleticism. Motor always running.

The 2025 Pangos All -South Frosh/Soph camp was all about the big men. A total of 8 inside forwards and centers were named to the Top 30 Cream of the Crop All-Star game with co-MVP honors going to 2028 Terrell Jackson (Carter) and 2029 Mesquite big man Alex Alexander.

Jackson is showing the type of improvement you love seeing in big men; frame filling out, coordination coming together, solid feet and a soft touch. Alex Alexander has an improved motor to go with elite power and athleticism. 2028 6’7 Kaiden Smith (Second Baptist) is a great addition for Second Baptist and nationally ranked point guard Skip Alston. Smith uses his length to rebound outside of his area and can be dominate in the paint. He also showed the ability to hit trail three pointers with solid form. The pick & roll, pick & pop options are limitless. 2028 6’10 Xavier Young (Faith Family) only played on Sunday after a weekend at Wooten Camp but made his presence felt almost immediately. Young’s mobility is much better from a year ago, athletic around the rim on both ends. He takes up space well while initiating and playing through contact. This year at Faith Family should pay off greatly for him. 2028 6’8 Eppiphane Affi (Xavier, Houston) is aggressive and looks to dunk everything around the rim. 2028 6’7 DeMarious Daniel (Mesquite) is my favorite board man in the class. Active on the glass he’s already productive as a rebounder with a raw offensive game. 2028 6’7 Luckie Herbert is the best shooting big in the class. Excellent touch with deep range Herbert has potential as a rebounding floor spacer.

2029 6’9 Felix Okam (Grand Prairie) showed tons of versatility to go with his length. Getting tips on balls you think are out of his range, rebounding aggressively, and handling the ball in transition Okam and the previously mentioned Alexander are 1A and 1B in the 2029 class.

It was an early start but 8 AM didn’t disappoint between Frisco Memorial and Dallas Carter. 2028 6’9 Carter Terrell Jackson and 2027 Frisco Memorial 6’9 Xander Pruzinsky was a heavyweight matchup between two of the best young post players in the country. With noticeable weight added to his frame Jackson displayed his improved post footwork and mobility. Pruzinsky continues to show relentless defensive and rebounding ability while becoming a consistent three point shooter in pick & pop and situations.

Amarion Hunter is making a strong case for the best point guard in the area in the 2027 class. Hunter got to his spots whenever and how often he wanted and was deadly from three. Frisco Memorial’s Caden Deffenbaugh had a poster dunk, a fitting start to a day where the 6’5 senior committed to New Mexico State.

In my opinion, Carter and Memorial have cemented themselves as two top 7 teams to begin the season.

Te’Zhan Francois of Lewisville had a “write his name down” outing against WT White. The 6’5 senior is an offensive threat with a good looking perimeter jump shot and ability to get to the rim. 6’ 2027 Trey Williams of WT White has the body of a strong safety and the kind of physicality at the point guard position that would make Bob Huggins proud. Williams is a defensive minded athletic playmaker that has the ability to control both sides of the ball.

2027 5’9 Isaac Lwaite of Woodrow Wilson is a small guard with big offense. Lwaite is a shifty playmaker and crafty finisher.

Tristan Taylor played behind two division 1 signees last season for Lancaster and the battles he must have faced in practice have him ready for this moment. The 6’7 senior has a knack for rebounding and is solid in the post on the offensive and defensive end. With the departure of Kayden Johnson, Lancaster is now my favorite to win the district of doom. Once 6’3 2027 Vincient Green settles in, the Tigers will have the offensive input and defensive prowess to earn their first district title as a 6A program.

This is my second time watching senior Kaleb Jackson of Kingdom Collegiate and the 6’6 senior did everything for his team. Played some point guard, hit threes, and battled on the glass.

SOC has a new coach in Antoine Thompson and a new backcourt in junior Jonathan Bradley and senior RC Herrin. Bradley is a high energy guard that smiles while he’s breaking down defenses and RC Herrin is a 5’9 guard with plenty of wiggle and a ton of heart. The Golden Bears go as far as Bradley and Herrin take them.
