Scholarships are made in the summer and with Texas being one of the most talented geographic areas in the country the Summer Championships, by Texas Hoops, is an excellent place to evaluate talent. Day 1 featured some good players and here is who caught my eye.
San Antonio basketball, though not widely known, always comes through with prospects and HD Toros always has players. 2025 6′ Jarrius Jackson Jr. is a must see for coaches looking for a lead guard. Jackson is the prototypical lead guard. He is unbothered as a ballhandler and lives in the middle of the court. When most guards want to over dribble in transition, Jackson looks for the pitch ahead and utilizes either hand when doing so. He also keeps the pressure on his defender and can score all over the floor.
Jackson’s running mate 2025 6’5 Xavier Rendon is a very good watch. What stands out immediately is the motor. He plays hard, hits the glass, can handle the ball, runs in transition, has a good looking jumper and makes real efforts on defense. A slasher, Rendon has the size and tools to make an impact at the next level.
2026 6’1 G Chandler Cornell of Team United Texas is what you call a gamer. He gets up for matchups and as every eye was on the return of 3D and Cornell took it personal. He can score from all 3 levels and you can tell he looks at defenders as food. Definitely worth tracking.
2025 6’5 Kamoni Ford of Team Griffin Academy translates to the next level as a wing player, but during his first GASO game he was blocking shots like a seasoned rim protector. His game says defender but his offensive game shows very good flashes, especially the jump shot.
Shawn Ward has solidified himself as one of the best grassroots coaches in the state of Texas and the recent announcement of the return of 3D had the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex buzzing. You would never know he recently put this team together because the game screamed togetherness and continuity on offense. 6’4 G Trae Nunn continues to show he knows how to shoot from all distances but it was his work with the ball in his hands that stood out. A ‘big guard’ Nunn overpowered weaker defenders and used his body to make scoring look easy. 2025 5’10 Jett McCasland runs the show and gets his teammates going, but don’t leave him open, he’s a catch and shoot. As a matter of fact, don’t leave any of 3D Empire’s team open because they all have the green light to torch you. 6’9 2026 Wyatt Seale is a growing pick and pop problem and hit multiple 3’s. He is comfortable setting screens and rolling to space. He’s also solid on the glass.
6’2 G Israel Johnson of Lee Green Basketball was very good against the Houston Raptors. He’s long, quick, and has a really nice jumper.
The EYBL is probably the most competitive league in all of grassroots basketball and sometimes playing off circuit lulls players to sleep, not with 2026 6’8 Austin Brown of JL3 Elite. He will have everyone going to Lufkin during the scholastic season. I wonder if he has Miller Kopp’s tenacity in him? Has great size as a combo forward, can shoot it, put it on the deck, play in transition and finish above the rim.
